From NCR - Belgian bishop advocates church recognition of gay relationships. Yes, you read that right - a male ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP in good standing with Rome…
The official teaching that the Catholic church can recognize only male-female committed relationships has to change, Bonny said.
Well, we could have stated the case for Sacramental Marriage Equality in simpler terms. Still, at this point, we are grasping at anything that looks like progress. This statement looks like a bit of progress.
The Economist has an interesting article about the current state of Women Religious: The Catholic church and American women: Breaking the habit. Some quotes…
According to Pew Research, the number of American nuns has dropped 72% since 1965—from 180,000 to 50,000… This drop makes sense, given the increased opportunities for American women outside the church and the sexism within it… Women who are called to religious life are understandably more drawn to institutions that afford them equal treatment and allow them to take on leadership roles.
Despite what the Economist says, we are not inclined to praise Francis “for his progressive social views”. Regarding women, Francis has not been the slightest bit “ambiguous”. He believes that women should be limited to inferior and subservient roles. He believes that the marriages of gay couples are not worthy of the same Sacramental dignity accorded to straight couples. Exactly where are his “progressive social views”? So far, this Pope has provided nothing more that slightly kinder rhetoric. We are looking for justice WITHIN the Roman church. How long will we wait?
