Perhaps it is a hangover from school days when the summer holidays eventually arrive with sighs of relief and shouts of joy. Perhaps because these summer days, for some of us, are just too hot to do anything but hide from the fierce sun in the middle of the day and condense the excitement of living to the cool of the early morning and the gentler warmth of the evening breezes.

It is the season of Summer. If you can, take time to find some solitude this summer.

Embrace the solitude. Notice the sounds of silence.

Eat the silence, dance the silence, wrap yourself in the silence.

Nurture your own soul in the silence. God is in the silence, in your own soul.

A Blessing of Solitude

(adapted from Anam Cara by John O’Donohue)

May you recognize in your life, the presence, power and light of your soul.

May you realize that you are never alone, that your soul in its brightness and belonging connects intimately with the rhythm of the universe.

May you have respect for your own individual individuality and difference.

May you realize that the shape of your soul is unique, that you have a special destiny here…

Recognize that there is something beautiful, good, and eternal happening.

May you learn to see yourself with the same delight, pride and expectation

with which God sees you in every moment.

Amen.

Blessings on your summer.
